Chapter Eleven

“How’d you get into my lab?” I ask my father as his disdainful stare follows Kendall until she’s gone.

“The board meeting is over. I excused myself from the social after party to find my son.” My father is leaning back against one of the lab tables with his arms and ankles crossed.

No idea how long he’s been there or what he overheard. I’m guessing he witnessed enough door banging to know we weren’t in the storage room looking for extra paperclips.

“You didn’t answer the question.” I nod to the lab door, where the security pad is located. “This place is locked down tighter than Fort Knox. Who let you in?”

“Wasn’t hard to convince the security officer on duty to let me in once he found out I’m your father.” Dad flicks an imaginary piece of lint off his jacket.

I’m sure Dad didn’t hesitate to mention that he’ll have a say over the guard’s employment status as soon as the company goes public.

Over my dead body.

“Just another day at the office?” One side of his mouth turns up in a half-cocked smile that doesn’t reflect in his eyes.

I adjust my cuffs. “What do you want, Dad?” I brace myself for the Ask. I know there is one, and considering he’s going to the trouble of trying to hijack my company, whatever it is he wants won’t be small. Might as well get it out in the open so I can say, not no, but hell no.

He studies me for a few moments, then pushes off the table. “We’re going to be grandparents.”

“Ah,” I smart off. “You’ve handpicked a wife for Grant this time, and she’s already pregnant? Pass along a little advice to my half-brother and tell him to be sure to revoke her country club membership.” I rub my chin thoughtfully. “And martial arts lessons aren’t a good idea either.”

“Don’t be a smart ass,” Dad huffs. “Your brother’s not getting married.”

“Grant forget to wear a condom?” I spout.

A tremor of guilt lances through me because I’m guilty of the same thing.

Jesus. That’s a first for me.

Dad walks to another lab table and traces his fingers down the back of a microscope. “You know, your mother and I thought the idea behind this company was absurd. We were certain Checkmate’s doors would be shuttered before the end of your first year in business.”

“Kind of like my marriage?”

He ignores my smartassery. “One of the few times I’ve been wrong.”

“Kind of like my marriage?” I repeat. He was wrong about both my business and my marriage. One caused enormous pride in my life. The other caused tremendous pain.

“We supported your decision anyway and figured we’d bail you out when the company cratered.”

“But it didn’t,” I say.

He shakes his head. “No, it didn’t. We’re proud of you and how far you’ve taken this…” He looks around the lab. “This idea that seemed to have no merit, yet you’ve turned it into a veritable empire.” He pulls at his tie.

“Look, Dad.” I pinch the bridge of my nose.
